A Modern Comedy

A Modern Comedy by John Galsworthy is the second great sequence in the author’s celebrated chronicle of the Forsyte family, following The Forsyte Saga. Comprising The White Monkey, The Silver Spoon, and Swan Song, the trilogy continues the story of the Forsytes and their descendants in the changing social landscape of early twentieth-century Britain.

Through the fortunes, ambitions, marriages, and conflicts of its characters, Galsworthy examines a society undergoing profound transformation after the First World War. Old ideals of wealth, property, respectability, and social position increasingly collide with a younger generation’s search for freedom, pleasure, and new values. With characteristic irony and psychological insight, Galsworthy explores questions of class, marriage, politics, art, and the changing nature of English society.

Published in 1956 by the Foreign Languages Publishing House in Moscow, this edition brings Galsworthy’s richly observed portrait of English social life to an international readership.
