Alpamys Batyr

Alpamys Batyr (Алпамыс Батыр) presents one of the great heroic epics of the Kazakh oral tradition, recounting the adventures of the legendary warrior Alpamys. Born after his parents’ long-awaited prayers for a child, Alpamys grows into a figure of extraordinary courage, loyalty, and strength, whose destiny becomes inseparable from the fate of his family and people.

The epic follows his struggles against injustice and adversity, his devotion to his beloved Gulbarshyn, and his determination to defend his homeland. Alongside its battles and dramatic adventures, the story preserves a vivid picture of traditional Kazakh values: honour, kinship, loyalty, bravery, and love of one’s native land. Alpamys Batyr is part of a rich body of Kazakh heroic folklore in which the deeds of legendary batyrs embody ideals of courage and national unity.

This 2014 edition, adapted and edited by Shaken Kumisbaev and published by Almatykitap Baspasy in Almaty, presents the tale in an accessible, richly illustrated format.
