Belaya Lebede Baseki Brillianta

Marat Konurov’s Vaska Brilliant’s “White Swan” is a historical crime novel set within the harsh and often brutal world of the Soviet Gulag. Inspired by the life of Vladimir Babushkin, known as Vaska Brilliant, a legendary figure in the Soviet criminal underworld, the novel traces his path from a difficult childhood through decades of imprisonment and confrontation with the authorities. At the centre of the narrative is also his relationship with Zoya, a woman serving a sentence in the Karaganda labour camps during the 1950s. Through their intertwined stories, Konurov explores loyalty, love, honour and the struggle to preserve one’s identity in a system built on coercion and cruelty. Spanning several decades of Soviet history, this dramatic account combines the atmosphere of the criminal underworld with a portrait of human endurance and the personal cost of resistance.
